From a lot of people I hear that it’s not bad when a cat isn’t eating for a day, and he won’t starve. That’s partly right, he won’t starve. But when your cat doesn’t eat, the body begins to use fat stores as fuel. This fat is then sent to the liver to be processed into lipoproteins. But that’s liver is not good at processing fat and it will accumulate it in the liver cells. This will cause the liver to not function properly anymore.
This disease is called the fatty liver disease. A lot of people don’t believe me when I tell them that if a cat doesn’t eat for 24 hours he/she can already develop liver failures.
When a cat won’t eat, this isn’t always because of behavior problems. It could also be a sign that there is something not right in the body of your cat. When your cat hasn’t eating for 24 hours, don’t wait it out but go to your vet right away. In the weekend and no vets open? Call the emergency vets. If the fatty liver disease isn’t treated fast, you may end up without a cat.
Why? Cats should eat every day.
I know some people are probably like: “My cat is fat, it would do him good not to eat for a day”. Wrong! Fat, normal or thin, not eating means seeing the vet!
