As some of you may have read, Hiro had an allergic reaction to his annual check up yesterday. An hour after he got the injection I saw him licking his paws big time. I first thought he was just grooming himself because he had just been to the vet and he smelled different or something. But the licking never stopped. This happened around 7 pm.
The itching became worser and worser. It drove Hiro nuts. He couldn’t sleep, kept walking around the apartment. His ears were red, his tongue and nose was red. And the pads under his paws were red and super hot. They were so itchy that Hiro kept licking and biting on it. And he was so tired. He was panting, and breathing really fast.
At 8:30 pm I decided to call the vet. Our own vet isn’t available anymore after 7 pm, so we had to call the so-called ‘evening vet’. He said it was most likely an allergic reaction to the injection. Which is weird, because Hiro has never had that before. He didn’t eat anything unusual either.
He told us to wait it out for a bit longer to see if it would stop, and keep an eye out. If his neck or head would swell up, or if his breathing got deeper, we had to come immediately. None of that happened, but there was no progress with Hiro either. It was after 10 pm, and I wasn’t planning to go to bed when Hiro felt like that. So we called again, and the vet told us to come over with Hiro.
We did. He did a full check up on Hiro. Checking his ears, heart, eyes, temperature. He had no fever. Everything seemed to be perfectly fine. But he did have a very high heart rate of 180 and a slight heart murmur but that was probably because of the stress. The vet gave Hiro an injection that would help to soothe down the allergic reaction and stop the itching. We were told that it was probably one of the substances in the injection that gave Hiro the allergic reaction and he was going to let our vet know about this too.
We got back home. separated the cats from each other because Suki was all hissing and growling at Hiro. This way they both could get some rest.
I checked up on Hiro a few times last night to make sure he was doing alright. At 3 am he didn’t have itchy paws anymore and he was sleeping.
This morning he seems to be doing alright. A bit groggy, tired. But he purred again! Suki is still confused of what’s going on, and still hisses and stalks Hiro and follows him everywhere. So when we’re gone we’re going to keep them separated. But the itch is gone.
I called out vet about what happened, and they we’re going to note it down and discuss this with the other vets. Maybe it’s something to think about, or watch out for in the future. But I’m seriously doubting about next year. I don’t know if the allergic reaction is going to get worse, or the same. And if that happens, I don’t want Hiro to get his annual injection.
