This is very important for people who have finally made the decision and are getting their very first cat ever! What kind of things do you need to have in your home for your new furry friend? Not to worry, Dianda is here to rescue and to help you out!

  • Litter box(es) and litter.
  • Food and water dishes.
    No plastic dishes.
  • Scratching post or tree.
A sturdy, rough-textured scratching post—at least three feet high—that allows her to stretch completely while scratching.
  • Cat carrier
For safe trips to the vet or groomer; the carrier you choose should be of sturdy plastic, rather than the cardboard type, as some cats hate the confinement of a carrier so much they will actually try their hardest to break out of it.
  • Grooming tools.
  • Pillows, blankets, beds, etc.
  • First Aid Kit
  • Cat/Pet Rescue Sticker.
So the firefighter will know you have an animal inside.
  • Toys.
  • Roller stick to get rid of hair on your clothes.

Cat Proof Your House

When your cat is ready to explore the rest his or her new home. Be sure to get rid of stray, small items she might chew on or swallow. Like toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, beads, etc. Pens and pencils should stay in drawers and you may also have to tape wires to baseboards and put caps on outlets.

Put away cleaning products, human medications and household poisons. Make sure your plants aren’t toxic to cats and that the food you give to him is healthy.

  1. Great article. I would add making sure you are registered with a good vet – ask friends/family who have animals for recommendations. We were very lucky to have an amazing one who always managed to put the cats at ease.

  2. Good pointers for new kitty families, especially about the bowls. We had plastic for our very first cat some 25 years ago. We didn’t know any better. His skin broke out all around his mouth. It has been glass, ceramic or stoneware ever since and this problem has never occurred again with our past or current cats.
