  • Euthanasia due to homelessness is by far the number one cause of death in cats.
  • Feral kitten mortality rates are about 75%
  • An estimated 80% of kittens that come into shelters are born to feral or stray cats.
  • Cats know what mood you’re in. Cats are sensitive to your moods, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they care.
  • Cats talk with their tails.
  • Cats have human-like emotions.
  • A cat’s appetite is the barometer of its health. Any cat that does not eat or drink for more than two days should be taken to a vet.
  • A cat’s tongue consists out of small ‘hooks’, which come in handy when tearing up food and grooming.
  • About two-thirds of cats have a fondness for catnip.
  • Cats being fussy eaters mostly happens when the vomeronasal, or Jacobson’s, organ becomes sensitized to a specific food, at which point the cat will reject any food that doesn’t fit the pattern it is expecting.

  1. What interesting facts about our feline family members! I always learn something here Dianda…..:D :D :D :D :D Sam was a feral kitten when we adopted him from our shelter so ferals are near and dear to my heart – I knew many of the cats who wound up there were ferals but was unaware the percentage was so high. Makes sense though.

    Happy Weekend! Pam

  2. Interesting facts! Their tail does really show what they want & how they feel! My cats tend to be very picky on their food sometimes… thanks for posting this!

At rolled on the floor on that one!!! Very funny, yet really true.

Yes, of course, they understand our moods and the like.

Last time I have been really sick (I posted something about Lipton soup that day) not only my cats knew I wasn’t feeling right, they seemed to care. All of them came to see me, one after the other. But they acted differently, they didn’t come too fast, or to play, or anything. They just wanted to tell me they were there, and I could count on them if needed. Okay, that’s probably not what they meant, but it looked like that.

But they still required that their meal be served on time. But did they care to prepare Lipton soup for me, huh? Did they?
