Black Cat Appreciation Day

Today is August the 17th, Black Cat Appreciation Day! I’ve seen it all over facebook, so I couldn’t really stay behind. Now, could I?

Black Cat Appreciation Day?
Today is to bring awareness to the world about the joy of living with a black cat, to forget about the black-cat-myths, and to help black cats across the globe get out of shelters alive.

Black cats have a bad reputation that they give bad luck once they cross your path, or that they are evil beings. Not to forget about all the other crazy superstition things about black cats. Because of that black cats are the least to be adopted from shelters. They are often the first to be put down. Let’s not forget about Halloween: October is often a tough month for our black furry friends. They often get roughed up and abandoned around that time.

Did you know that in some cultures the black cat is a sign of good luck, instead of bad luck?

Black Cat Appreciation day was created by Wayne Morris, who invented the day in honor of his sister who passed away years ago on August 17, and the black cat that she loved. He used social networking to spread the word, and Black Cat Appreciation Day was created!

You can visit Wayne’s Facebook page For the Love of Black Cats (Black Cat Appreciation Page).

  1. Such a great thing, to have a Black Cat day. I have definitely found black cats harder to adopt – it seems to be a world wide thing. If only all cultures could see them as Good Luck. Personally, I’m a real fan of them.

    • I’m a fan of all kind of cats! Tho, I never had a black cat before. But I find black cats even more mysterious! Especially when they are pitch black, and with those big yellow eyes! Beautiful!

    • I’m a fan of them as well, Tho. When we were at the shelter to find a buddy for Suki, there was this little black kitten, he was really pitch black! Sadly, we couldn’t take him because he went with his sister, a snow white kitty. And three cats is just too much in a small apartment.

  2. I’ve had all kinds of cats, but my only all-black one had to be put down at a very young age :( But – I do live in one of those culture who think they are lucky! As strays here, or outdoor only cats, I see a lot of orange cats and black and white ones.
