Forget the people-pleasing scents. Forget special formulas or alternative ingredients. Your cat is more likely to prefer unscented clumping litter, according to preference tests. And if you want to keep your cat using “the bathroom,” be sure to keep it clean, place it in a quiet, cat-friendly place and don’t use any liners in the box — cats don’t like them. None of these changes will address a cat who has stopped using the box because of illness. Urinary tract infections and other health issues need to be addressed by your veterinarian before box re-training can begin.
I know people use scented litter so they won’t smell the nasty smell of poop. But really, if you scoop the box daily, and clean it as often as possible, you don’t need a scented litter, right?
Now, I admit, I don’t always scoop daily. But I try to!

I clean once in the morning and once at night. So the smell disappears! =)
Which is good!
Barnaby started off with a litter tray but doesn’t use it anymore.
He’s turning into a big cat!
I would add that anything designed to make a litter box smell good for humans will make it smell bad for cats. This includes closed litter box (that is, with a roof and a door). It keeps the smell inside, where the human cannot notice, but the cat does, and will use another piece of furniture when the smell is too much.
I have an open one, and a closed one, with a cover. They use the open one more.
I have boxes with lids – my previous dog decided the litter tray was a snack box. Eww. This dog does not, thankfully – but the boys are used to them now. I am terrible at cleaning them out until Spot drops a massive stink bomb! You’re supposed to have one more box than you have cats, if you have more than one cat, too. I’ve got just two for two cats but they seem to be okay with that. But I never leave a wet towel on the floor, have no rugs in the bathroom, and keep cardboard boxes away from the litter trays as to cut down on temptation!
I hate scented litter myself as the dust gets up my nose and I taste it for hours. I can’t imagine what that must feel like for a cat.
Stink bombs! Suki does the same! Or she pees on the bed…
I always scoop daily. But I think the most difference is made by the fact that I got him wood litter. Everyone is amazed that my house doesn’t smell like cats at all.
Wood litter? Really?
I have a closed litter box and I clean it twice a day. Everyone’s happy about it.
I have an open and a closed one, so my kitties can choose!
It doesn’t matter what you use inside the litterbox, it always smells disgusting if you don’t clean it daily
True! Tho, yesterday i laughed so hard! Hiro was on the ‘open’ litterbox. And while he was trying to cover up his poop with litter. he managed to kick his poop out! Haha, i just couldn’t help but to laugh at it.
